We are over half way through the school year and may need to reestablish some communication with our children about school. Make sure you are checking with your children about their homework. Make sure you set the expectation that all homework be completed and turned in on time. Communicate about the importance of proper behavior at school. Discuss how we treat others with respect, especially adults. Talk to your children about bullying. Make sure they are not bullying others. Talk to them about helping others that are being bullied. If they ride the bus, discuss proper behavior on the bus for safety.
Ask open ended questions about their day. What was the best and worst part of the day? What did you learn or read about today? How are your friends doing? Did you have any problems at school today? Make sure you check your child’s backpack every day for important notes and forms.

Family Involvement Corner November 2016
Events this month:
Family Storytelling Night Tuesday November 15th 5:30 p.m. – Come join us at Chouteau for pirate tales, pizza, pictures and pages (book fair). Parent Tip:
Encourage your children to read every day. Bring books in your car to have for long trips and waiting at the doctor’s office. Encourage your children to re-read their favorite books. Turn off the electronics and make time for reading. Ask your child questions about what they are reading to make sure they are understanding what they are reading. Make sure your child is reading books on their reading level. You don’t want them to be so frustrated they give up or miss out on what is going on in the story. Be patient with new readers and let them try to sound out words. Even older kids like to be read to at times. Make sure they are choosing books that they are interested in, they will be more excited to read.

9/23/16- Here are some friends from yesterday counting flames. Every Thursday, they can count and trade flames. 10 red flames = 1 gold 10 flame. Although they use this as a time to see how close they are to their next reward, it's actually a great way to practice math!!
9/7/16- We've gotten off to a great start in second grade. We have already had our first big flame reward (extra recess) and are well on our way to earning another reward within the next week or so. Please make sure you are practicing spelling words at home. Go to the reading and writing tab and scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the spelling link to find other ways to practice spelling words. I will do my best to update this link every month with new ideas.

8/23/16 These pictures show us working with our first math tool, connecting cubes. We discovered many ways to use them such as counting, measuring, shape-building and sorting. You can see Miss Long talking with James about the shape he is making.
5/5/16- Cooper wrote a story problem, then Benjamin drew the array, and finally Mahamed wrote the number model and the answer. Great teamwork!!
3/11/16- Kasey turned in flames to do a teacher's hair. I was the lucky recipient. One of the students said to him, "You shouldn't be a hair person for your job!"
3/8/16- Yikes! It's been awhile since I've checked in with you. Please make sure your child is here everyday bell to bell. We have started a new attendance contest and although we can't win first place, we can definitely win second. Please help us out!
1/22/16- HAPPY DAY 100!! I love, love, love celebrating Day 100. One of the activities we did was estimate 100 connecting cubes. After checking our estimations, we got exactly 100 and then created sculptures with them. Once they were completed, we voted on the following categories: tallest, longest, most colorful, most realistic, and most unique. Please scroll through and enjoy!

1/7/16- We are slowly getting back in the swing of things. We welcome a new student- Akim- to our classroom. This puts our count at 24. Above are some pictures from our rock experiments this week. This has been a highlight!
12/3/15- During the month of December we will be completing our second round of testing in reading. Although this information will not be recorded on the report card, I will send home information about where your child is on the reading continuum.
11/12/15- Penny Wars end tomorrow. Can you help us out by sending in any loose coins you have? Thanks!!
10/29/15 Pictures from our experiments with using marbles on ramps to discover how to make them travel in spirals and loops.

10/13/15- Our class after the music program about Dr. Seuss!
10/8/15- We earned our tenth big flame yesterday for classroom behavior. So today we voted and Pajama Day was the winner with 11 votes! So... your kids can sleep in a little longer since they can keep their pajamas on when they come to school. YEAH!!!!!
10/2/15- Today was a blast experimenting with spinners in science. We used small, yellow spinners and larger, red spinners. Please ask your child which one worked better because there was definitely a difference!!
9/18/15 The following images are from our writing celebration day as we finished the launching unit in writers workshop.
Magnet fun during inside recess.
9/14/15 We were so excited that we FINALLY got base 10 blocks to use in our classroom!! We will use these to help us understand place value (ones, tens, hundreds, and even thousands!). These pictures show us exploring with our new materials. Mostly we were building things, but we are going to use these in many ways to enhance our understanding of numbers.
9/11/15 Look at this fantastic learning during math today!
8/31/15: Here are some photos from math workshop last week. The top photo shows number line squeeze where one student tries to guess the other student's number. Then they "squeeze" the number line by giving clues about whether the number is greater than or less than. The bottom photo shows the number grid game. Look for this one to come home soon!

8/21/15: Sorry I lost last week's picture that was posted here. I will try to get it back soon! We had a great week of learning. As we work to establish our routines, you will begin to see more evidence of that learning. Thanks for all you are doing at home to help.
